CW – Thursday, April 6th, 2017

Supplies: pen or pencil, journal/paper, Comics Key Features Packet, either “The Veil” from Persepolis or your chosen graphic novel, a piece of paper.

Daily Objective: to understand the building blocks of comics as a narrative form.

Bell-ringer: Write a short story in which your protagonist suffers from an unfortunate degree of hubris. Does overconfident pride blind the character to the consequences of that individual’s actions? Does arrogance lead the protagonist toward one big mistake, or several small errors that lead inevitably to tragic misfortune?

  1. Assignment: Learning how to write a comic script
    • Read the front and back of the middle page in the packet.
    • Choose a page in “The Veil” and write it as a script like the example provided.
    • Remember to: number the panels, indicate the character speaking, describe each panel like “artist’s instructions.” Captions and speech are written IN CAPITALS. Only artist instructions are written in regular sentence case.
    • Remember: Comics read left to right, just like a regular book.
  2. Homework: find a graphic novel to read in class. You can get one from one of your teachers, the media center, or the public library. Or if you already have one, bring it in. We will be using these later this week. Make sure you have it in class on Wednesday. I will check for them on Friday.
    • Read your chosen comic and write a short analysis (half page to a page) of its characters, plot, and themes.
    • Analyze your comic’s key features. Describe each in a sentence like we did with “The Veil.”
    • Choose an element of your chosen comic to emulate in the comic you will write. Describe how the element is used in the published comic and how you used it in your own. Write five sentences or more.
    • This is due 4/14. I will give you Thursday and Friday this week to work on it. Make sure you bring your comic/graphic novel to class!
